Lizzie Chancellor tells us what it’s like running her eponymous design studio and why her greeting cards are like nothing you’ve seen before.

On balancing her business with motherhood…

I worked for a magazine whilst running my business alongside, and left the magazine to have a baby in 2016. I took some time off with my son, and just after his first birthday I picked things back up with my business and decided to take it forward for two full days a week. I still don’t have enough time to spend on it and I wish I had more, but at the same time I love spending the days with my son so I think what I have currently is a good balance.

On an average work day…

I start my day having breakfast with my son and then I take him to nursery. I really enjoy being able to have breakfast together – it’s one of the perks of working from home as I can start my day a bit later. When I get back, I print off all my orders, answer any urgent emails and make a cup of tea. I might then plan some social media posts, pack up all the orders and, if I’m lucky, have time to design new products! This is my favourite part but unfortunately, I spend the least time on it as running a business involves so many other things.

On her desire to create “simply beautiful cards”…

I’m drawn to clean, simple design and I don’t like to overcomplicate things. I strive to design original cards and prints that you haven’t seen before as I think it’s important to have your own place in the market. If I see something that inspires me – such as nature, buildings, clothing – I like to either take a picture or note it down so I can think about it when I’m designing my next range.

On her animal print collection…

Well who doesn’t love animal print?! It’s so versatile and can be done in so many different ways. I’ve seen it on cards, wallpaper, clothes, furniture, even cars! I designed a whole collection of animal print birthday cards which are bright, strong colours with the words “Happy birthday” written in gold foil, and I just love them. They’re perfect for anyone who loves animal print and totally unisex which is another thing I’m big on. I like my cards to appeal to everyone and where possible, be unisex.

On manufacturing in the UK…

I think it’s important to support British suppliers and printers and keep everything within the UK. I’m proud to be British and I don’t feel the need to source elsewhere. I’m also very proud to use almost 100% recycled and recyclable materials as I think this is also really important and something most businesses should be thinking about.
